Bloody Dell

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Well 2 weeks of trying to fins bugs in a piece of software I’ve written at work only to discover that only the Dell machine was getting the problem.

This morning, thanks to this wonderful blog post from Mark Russinovich we finally tracked the problem to a non-paged pool leak. On closer inspection (ie going through the steps Mark lists) we realised that there was a leak in WavXDocMgr.sys. After much hunting around we discovered that this is in the Dell Control Point Security Manager. We uninstalled it and the leak has gone.

Couple that with the multiple hardware failure we had on this machine and I can honestly say “Cheers Dell”. You’ve caused us to truly f**k off a customer and absorbed waaaay more of my time on one problem than I would have ever thought possible.
